#FinCon12 Spending—Round 1

Financial Blogger ConferenceThis last Wednesday morning, the registration for this year’s Financial Blogger Conference (FinCon12) opened. Along with that, the hotel could be reserved through the handy link that gives us the promotional conference pricing. Seeing as how attending FinCon12 this year was on my 2012 goals list as well as my ‘gotta do it’ list; I was very excited.

I’m already positive that my enthusiasm cost us more money, at least on the tickets for the conference. Like 5 minutes after I registered, I found out there was a coupon code you could use if you took the survey earlier on. Had I known that before I purchased our tickets ($149 each), I could have saved a total of $76.00. So there’s the first bit of money I totally wasted for the conference.

In addition to the conference registration, there was also the matter of booking the hotel and airfare. My honey is going to attend the conference with me; so we’re adding a couple days to our stay so that we can have a little vacation. FinCon12 is going to be in Denver Colorado this year, and neither my honey nor I have ever been to Denver. It’ll be fun. :-)

When making the hotel reservation, through the special link, you can get your room for $99 per night…of course that doesn’t include all the hidden fees they sneak in. The Financial Blogger Conference is going to be at the Grand Hyatt Denver, which is really nice.

It’s located in downtown Denver, so there’s got to be a ton of great stuff nearby. Since I had to purchase through the special link, I’m not going to be earning cash-back or points on the purchase. :-( Still, it seems like a decent price for a nice hotel. We’re going to be staying at the Grand Hyatt Denver for 7 nights for a total of $795.22.

I didn’t want to have a hard time later on getting plane tickets, so I just got them right after booking the hotel. We could have saved about $50 on our airfare if we would have gone for the non-direct flights. Instead, we paid about $50 more so that we could have the direct flights without having to get off at strange airports and find the next terminal. In my opinion, that’s worth $50 round-trip.

This time, I was able to earn some points from our airfare purchase—only 1,000 points, but it’s better than nothing. I went through MyPoints and bought our tickets from Expedia. It’s really easy to do and only took me like a minute.

We got 2 round-trip tickets from Portland, Oregon to Denver, Colorado at the times we wanted for a total of $471.20. I could have been smarter about this and compared more prices, set-up alerts and all that other great stuff…but I didn’t.

It feels good to know that everything is taken care of and I don’t need to stress out about anything. We lined up our house/dog/baby-sitter and the husband requested the time off work. Attending the 2nd annual Financial Blogger Conference is no longer a maybe, it’s a sure thing. Doing things this way ensures that nothing will get in the way, as well as nobody backing out—I’m horribly shy.

Still, I spent a TON of money on Wednesday. I’m sure if I would have chilled out and taken my time I would have gotten way better deals and saved a lot of money. But that’s okay, because blogging is important to me and travel is important to both my honey and myself. We’re spending our money on the things that are important to us, because sometimes that’s what really matters.

Spending Total 4 Round 1 of FinCon12

Conference Registration $149 x 2 = $298.00

Hotel = $795.22

Airfare = $235.60 x 2= $471.20

Total = $1,564.42

To me, that’s a crapload of money. It stressed me out to spend all that money and I ended up getting a really bad headache (spendover), but I feel better about it all now. Not only will I get to meet tons of other personal finance bloggers and learn how to be a better blogger, but I’ll have to get over my fear of flying. It’s going to be much better to get over going to Denver than to Europe.

Are you attending FinCon12?

    • Airfare is crazy expensive, I wish I had one of those credit cards that earns miles. :-( I was considering going solo, but I’m so d@mn shy I’d probably just hide in the room.

  1. The nice thing about attending a financial blogger conference? You’re guaranteed to get the lowdown on the actual costs!

    7 days sounds good; you turned the conference into a vacation, so you’re probably better off than going on a separate vacation entirely.

  2. eesh…that IS a lot of cashola. I’m going again this year and plan on the trip costing about $700 or so..but I got a free $300 flight voucher from American Airlines last year, so it hacked away at my total cost. I’ll probably feel about $400 to go out to Denver .

    See you there!

    • That’s not too bad. Is that for just you, or is your wife going as well? I need to get some free flight vouchers, that would be cool. :-)

  3. Ouch! That’s definitely a lot of money. I’m trying to save as much as possible, so I’ll probably do a lot of shopping around on airfare, and certainly rooming up with someone (or 2) to save money on the hotel. I’ve been looking for that dang survey in my email but it looks like I deleted it :( so I’ll have to come out of pocket for the ticket.

    • It really is, but it’ll be nice to have a mini vacation and have my honey there. That’s the main reason it’s costing so much, in addition to the fact that I wanted to be all stress-free about it all.

  4. I’m sure the money will be well worth it. I have heard such fabulous things about the conference. I can’t make it this year but it will be on my to do list for 2013! I’ll just live vicariously through my new friends this year!

    • I missed last year’s conference and heard so many wonderful things about it, that I really regetted not being able to go. I think it’ll be worth it too, I’m crazy excited. :-)

  5. Wow, that’s a hefty cost. I’m still weighing my options. Last year I was lucky enough to win a free ticket to the conference but still shelled out $500 in travel and hotel. I’m going to wait a few weeks and see who will be presenting.

    • You won a free ticket last year, that’s pretty cool. Hopefully you’ll like whoever is presenting and get a ticket. :-)

  6. I’m sad I can’t make it this year. To make matters worse, I will actually be in Denver the weekend before for my Brother In Law’s wedding so it is like the ultimate tease!

  7. For being a PF conference, it was sure hard to find out how much the tickets cost. I chose Europe over Colorado, but in fairness, I made that choice before I even started my site or met all these great people.

    I’m praying for a blog miracle that I earn some windfall, find an unsold ticket, and can go.

    :(

    • That’s pretty funny, because I’m going to be postponing our trip to Europe to next year, so that I can attend the conference. I hope you get your miracle, everybody who went to the conference last year seemed to be thrilled. :-)

  8. I’m going!!! Can’t wait!!! My impatience probably cost me $100 for the plane ticket, but I rather make sure I have a spot than risk having to drive 18 hours. Altogether, I have spent $538 and am budgeting for another $150 for food and extras. The conference ticket was $111, the hotel will be $38 a night for 4 nights since I am rooming with Kay Lynn (Bucksome Boomer) and Suba (Wealth Informatics) since we are all friends already, and the plane ticket was $275. I will be doing a write up in March most likely since I signed up to be a speaker and should know by then if my ticket is being refunded or not…fingers crossed.

    As for your $1500 for the con, think of it as $750 per person. :-) Plus, it will be awesome!!!

    • That would be so awesome if they have you as a speaker! I’m crazy excited too, especially since I didn’t get to go last year. :-( That will kinda suck though, since everybody else will know eachother. Still, I can’t wait. :-)

    • That’s not bad, especially since you’re coming from Canada. Aren’t you? My memory sucks. But anyways, YAY! I’m glad you’re going. :-)

  9. I’m planning on going this year as well. I’m looking forward to it. As far as the expense I plan on writing off a lot of it on next year’s taxes as a blogging expense. I’m hesitating adding this link as I don’t want to come off all spammy, but a friend of mine wrote a great post concerning taxes and blogging that I thought would be relevant to you. http://www.bloggingbasics101.com/2011/12/what-do-bloggers-need-to-claim-for-taxes/ Enjoy!

    • It’s awesome how bloggers can write off so much stuff on their taxes; I’ve been looking into it lately. The only thing I’m not sure about is what I can actually claim for the conference. My husband is going with me to help, plus we’re staying a few extra days. I’m sure I’ll get it figured out. :-)

      I left the link in, normally I don’t, but it’s related and might be helpful to other bloggers. :-)
