September Credit Score Update—Happy Dance Edition

happy danceseptember 2011 credit scoreA good amount of people wouldn’t be too excited to have a credit score of 697 but I’m ecstatic! A few months ago, my credit score took a hit (down to 685 but still a drop) due to the addition of the Evil Credit Card.

Before that, I was able to get it up to 697 and now I’m back baby. Unless I don’t get myself into some crazy $hit, it should only go up from here. My last credit score update was in July when my score was 690. I had planned to post my credit score update in August but since there wasn’t any change I figured I wouldn’t waste anybody’s time.

I’m fairly certain this increase in my credit score is due to the decreasing balance on the Evil Credit Card because this lowers the amount of my available credit that I am utilizing. It’s also another month or two to add into the whole credit history bag.

All I need now is to finish paying the card off and for this to come off next year and then of course to keep moving forward towards a fabulous credit score. :-)

Don’t forget, you can check your credit score for free (no credit card, no fees, no trial memberships) at Credit Sesame. :-)

How’s your credit score doing?

    • Thanks Aaron. :-) I get my credit score from CreditKarma.com and it’s totally free, you should check it out—so far I’m loving it.

  1. That’s awesome Jen! I have a question – what exactly is considered a good credit score? Me and the husband are in the middle of refinancing our mortgage and the score came back as 730. The info said something about not enough revolving credit (?) Is this because we do not have credit cards? We are all about paying in cash – if we don’t have the funds on hand, it doesn’t get bought.

    • Thanks Kelly. :-) The score I’m showing isn’t my FICO score; it’s just my plain-old credit score. I’m just using it to track now since I don’t really “need” to know my FICO score right now.

Since you’re refinancing, then 730 is more than likely your FICO score. From what I’ve gathered, FICO scores can range from 300-850 and each credit reporting company (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian) has a separate one for you.

On the FICO website it says: Scores higher than 720-750+ are ideal. Any higher really doesn’t matter. Once you get this high, you have excellent scores regardless.

REVOLVING CREDIT- You are totally right, this is why you don’t have any, it’s all about credit cards and you two should still be proud. Unfortunately, even though you guys do so great with paying cash and not using credit, to them it doesn’t matter. Having a credit card or two that is used responsibly, even if you just charge a pack of gum and pay it off at the end of the month, shows that you can be trusted. It sucks that it has to be this way but it is.

All that aside, 730 that’s awesome Kelly! Good for you and without any revolving credit too. 😉 I hope you and your honey get a good rate.

  2. I thought I was the only one who got excited about my credit score. The last time I checked, mine was around 750 which made me so happy. I finally felt like I was doing something right!

  3. Been afraid to check mine for two reasons. One I know it aint great and sure I have a collection out there (should check just so I can take care of it) second Im not sure I trust those websites like freecreditscore.com. I need to get on tops of it so Ill be looking into it soon.

    • Even if it’s not great, it’s fun to track it and see your hard work pay off. I’m sketchy of them too but I use creditkarma.com to get mine for free and so far it’s all good. :-)

      • NOOOOOOOOOOOO JEFF! The ostrich technique is never a good one. Go get your report screw the score right now. I think there is a free site called AnnualCreditReport (as opposed to Free) – you get your report once a year.

If you have collections out there you need to make sure they don’t turn to default judgments.

  4. Nice! So close to 700, I am sure you can taste it :)

I have not checked my score in a couple of months. This reminds me I have to do that.
