Ways I Save #9

My husband is a simple guy who doesn’t like to fuss much with his hair, so this makes saving money really easy. He used to go to and get his hair cut for like $15 bucks, but not anymore.

We spent about $30 and bought him one of those men’s haircutting razor things and have saved so much money. This was his idea, not mine, so he gets the saving credit here. :-) About every 6 weeks, he whips out his razor thing and just shaves it all off—again, his idea. I like longer hair on him, but it just gives him a hard time.

The first time, I actually tried to give him a sexy haircut and realized I totally sucked! That’s when he started shaving it off. So, how much do we save by doing this?

Haircut @ $15 every 6 weeks (so about 8 per year) = $120 per year

Sure, it might not be a lot of money, but all the little things we do help. Over 10 years, that’s $1,200 and over 30 years $3,600. Just remember that It all adds up!

But wait…that’s not all. What about my haircuts? I have to admit, I don’t go to Great Clips or Super Cuts. I know that they could save us a lot of money, but every single time I’ve ever been there, they’ve made my hair look awful. I go to this amazing chick and pay $35 for my haircuts. My hair (and nails too) grow super-fast, which means I should go in for haircuts more often than most people. Normally, I would hold out to 8 weeks for the haircut and sneak-in for a quick bang trim ($5) in 4 weeks.

Not anymore, I only get my hair cut twice a year and go in for bang trims every 8 weeks. It kinda sucks sometimes, but I just try to get creative with my hairstyles until I go in again. I’ll live. So, how much does that save us?

Before:

6 haircuts x $35 = $210
13 bang trims x $5 = $65
Total per year = $275

Now:

2 haircuts x $35 = $70
6 bang trims x $5 = $30
Total per year = $100

We save $175 a year by waiting out my haircuts and trims. Not too bad. Between the two of us, that’s a totally yearly savings of $295. :-)

Do you do anything to save on your/your family’s haircuts?

Are you talented (unlike me) enough to do them yourself?

  1. We have one of those hair cut things too – so my husband cuts his own hair and our 3 sons. My daughter is 4 and has had 2 haircuts since she’s been born! Her hair does not grow very fast and is not thick at all, the poor girl! And me, well I could care less about my hair – I do not use any products in my hair, do not use a hair dryer or curling iron, I just wash my hair daily and let it air dry. I think we save quite a bit of money doing things this way :)

    • @Kelly- Seems like you guys are saving a ton on haircuts, good for you. Our daughter’s hair was the same way until she was about 6. No hair products, no drying or curling—you must have some healthy hair. 😉 I’m kinda similar; I never curl my hair, use hair products maybe once a month and only dry my bangs (when they’re not overgrown) and then air dry. If there’s a special occasion where I need to look super-glam, I might dry all my hair—but that rarely ever seems to happen. You guys seem to be doing awesome in saving on hair expenses. :-)
