Closing, India & #Fincon12

Financial Blogger ConferenceBack in January I asked my husband to put in a request for vacation time so that he could go to FinCon12 (Financial Blogger Conference) with me. I missed out last year and swore that wouldn’t happen this year. So many months in advance, he put in the request and got it approved.

Of course, I immediately purchased everything: conference tickets, booked our hotel and purchased plane tickets. I didn’t want to take any chances that I would miss out on such an awesome opportunity again.

Now with Honey’s boss on medical leave and his recertification (required to continue working and bringing in the bucks) falling right in the middle of the conference, I can’t go to FinCon…again. :-(

As if that wasn’t enough, we’re also in the middle of buying our first house. The last time I spoke with our lender, he said we should be closing on the house the first or second week of September.

I had to cancel our hotel reservation and return our conference tickets. I was able to get most of the money back for those, and used it for some of our house buying costs. What about our plane tickets that I bought 7 months early you ask? I don’t even know!

I called Expedia to ask them for my money back or get a credit with them—that was interesting. Now I don’t mean this to sound rude or however it’ll probably sound since I’m typing it, but I cannot understand India phone people.

I suck at understanding anybody with a strong accent normally, but get me on the phone with India and I’m just dumbfounded. I know they are speaking English, but I just can’t understand anything they’re saying.

I did come away with this though…I think?:

  • The airlines suck (United Airlines and Frontier Airlines) and won’t give me any of my money back and I cannot get a credit with Expedia either.
  • I can change the tickets now to another date or destination and pay $150 per ticket (each way) plus any additional amount between the value and the new amount. ($600 in fees)
  • I can cancel my tickets now and use them before January 23, 2013 and pay $150 per ticket, each way and any additional amount just like above. ($600 in fees)

I’m not sure what to do, or if that’s even right. I would really like to get my four hundred and some-0dd dollars back, but I’m not sure how. This was my first time buying plane tickets, so I should have paid more attention to what happens if you need to cancel. Honestly, I didn’t even think about it because I was so sure that I would be going.

On the brightside, I did learn a couple of lessons for next year’s Financial Blogger Conference:

1) The conference will not sell out the first day, so chill out and take things slow.

2) Before purchasing the conference tickets next time, make sure there isn’t a promo code floating around.

3) Watch the prices of plane tickets and buy when they are low.

4) Read the terms and conditions and all that jazz before purchasing airline tickets, just in case. It’s much better to know ahead of time even if you don’t anticipate cancelling.

Have you ever planned too far ahead and lost money too?

  1. I know exactly what you mean about customer service reps from India! I don’t have a problem talking to someone in Indiana- but I just cannot understand them!

I have had to reschedule through Expedia before. I’m pretty sure that you are right about their policy. It is $150 to change your flight per round trip ticket.

  2. I’d almost considered transferring my plane ticket to NYC so that I could attend FINCON but it would be about $500 in fees and then I’d have to pay the fees for my friend’s transfer, and no matter how much I want to go to FINCON that is not worth it.

I’m sorry to hear about that. Maybe try to call again and get an English speaking native?

    • I wish. If you call and get India, you’ll always get India—at least in my experience.

I wish you could just go online somewhere and find out where the call centers are before deciding to do business with companies, that would make it so much easier.

  3. I’ve often wondered why companies use non-native English speakers for customer service. Is it just too expensive to hire native speakers or does no one want that job? I think you’re stuck on the tickets. Might just have to chalk that one up to experience. We fly a couple of times per year to see parents, and usually use Frontier. I check Expedia to see prices, but usually buy through the Frontier site. You can choose different levels of tickets which have varying change or cancel fees, so if you think you might not be able to go, you pay $30 more for the ticket and they can change it if you need to. I’m sure other airlines have similar features. Airline travel has really gotten crappy. I usually feel like they are hearding cattle instead of serving customers. Sad.

    • It saves the companies TONS of money by outsourcing to India.

I’m sure there are a ton of people in the US who would love the job, especially with the high unemployment rates.

It seems like I’m just going to have to write it off as another lesson learned. These lessons sure are getting expensive. LOL :-)

  4. That sucks about not being able to go to FinCon and not being able to get a refund on the flight. Airlines are pretty brutal about not being able to get a refund. I’m not sure if there is anything you can really do there. As for India call centers, obviously they are significantly cheaper to operate than one in the US, otherwise they wouldn’t accept that drop in service quality.

  5. Years ago, I bought plane tickets (flying out of Atlanta) for a wedding about six months down the road. During the intervening time, we moved states and I had to change the tickets to fly out of a different airport. It was back in the “good old days” though, and only cost me $25 per ticket. I think $600 is RIDICULOUS. It should be some percentage of the overall ticket purchase price, capped at a certain level, not a flat-fee.

  6. Airline tickets are the worst to return. I have only one suggestion…if the flight is overbooked, sometimes they will ask you to fly on a later flight, and they will reimburse you by giving you anther ticket. So…you could go to the airport, see if it’s offered on your flight, get scheduled on a later flight, not take it, but have some ticket vouchers for a later trip.

It’s terribly unethical. And if it’s failed you’ve gone through airport security and sat and waited for a flight you can’t take for nothing.

I know what you mean about people on the phone, too! When we order Chinese I make my boyfriend order because I just can’t understand. It’s not like I get annoyed with THEM or anything…it’s just that I literally can’t place an order there because I don’t understand what they’re asking me.

    • I have such bad luck, I could almost guarantee they wouldn’t bump me. Also, I think I would feel too guilty doing something like that.

I know, I don’t get annoyed at the India phone people either, they’re always very polite and nice (well their tone sounds nice). I just feel bad and frustrated that I have no clue what in the world they are saying.
